Clark (Cheech) originally from Vernal, UT is relatively famous from his days as a steer wrestler in Elko Nevada. He ties a few flies now and again when he's not busy modeling plus size clothing. He has tied for many years, and got his start in fly design with Rainy's flies, where he created the Cheech Leech, Grumpy Frumpy, and other effective patterns. He is now an innovator for Fulling Mill, and many of his fly patterns are available through them. His most notable accomplishment in fly tying is that he once tied 65 San Juan worms in 20 minutes, and eating a Big Mac in 4 bites....
Curtis Fry
Curtis has been tying flies for over 20 years. He learned to fish in the mountains and high deserts of Eastern Oregon targeting trout, bass, crappie and catfish. Even though he battles the little known disease of "hot dog fingers," he still has amazing dexterity while at the vise.
HI, guys Are one of you El-frito on Flickr?
ReplyDeleteYep. That's Curtis.
DeleteDo you also sell custom flies? love the patterns and pics!
ReplyDeleteI'll occasionally tie custom flies. Shoot me an email for more information. cheech@flyfishfood.com
DeleteCheech, Just want the world to know how great your leaches are.
ReplyDeleteOut of the corner of his he thought he saw a rise.
Wait, there is is again.
The green cheech leach flew through the air, launched by the 6 weight rod
landing a few inches from the reeds.
A Twitch, then another, then ...BAM
The fight was on
A couple of tense minutes (Don't worry, that is a 3X tippet), and the fish came to the net
ALMOST 25 inches
A brief kiss on the lips, a quick photo, and back in the water.
See ya next time I'm in the bottoms.
Dirflyfish
Excellent! Thanks for the write up.
DeleteCheech
I sure hope that you guys make it. Do either of you two have any business management experience and/or formal business education? How deep are your pockets?
ReplyDeleteFrom where we sit, we've already "made it". We started a fun little blog with a basic store and we take some orders here and there. Deep pockets having nothing to do with this as it's 100% NOT about money. Even so, it's bootstrapped, so no harm no foul.
DeleteBut FWIW, I'm a partner in a business management consulting company with around 15 years of business management/process, supply chain, e-Commerce and all other sorts of applicable experience ranging from mom & pop shops all the way up to Fortune 500 clients. So yeah, I've got a little experience to boot if I needed to bust out the big boy panties... :)
Well played, Curtis.
DeleteHello I like ur Sculpin flies. They look big.! What Flyrod do u use for casting them. 8 weight.? Whats ur rod setup..??
ReplyDeleteOur streamers vary in size quite a bit, but not too big for a good fast 6 wt.
Deletehope you don't mind the profile of your flies on my blog.....
ReplyDeletehttp://freestonebound.blogspot.com/
very impressed with your flies and have hand tied and fished everyone I mention with great success..... Curtis gets honorable mention, also....YOU GUYS ROCK!
So if Curtis gets Honorable mention, that means that I'M THE CHAMP... ;) Anyway, thanks for the kind words.
Delete;)
DeleteElko, NV... Seriously? Some great water out there.
ReplyDeleteYep... only for about a year, but that's what I get when I let Curtis write my profile info. There IS some great water out that way. Great bass, wipers, and curt-bows.
DeleteSaw your Ice Caddis pattern on your blog with the deer hair in a dubbing loop.
ReplyDeleteThought it reminded me of a technique I posted on Hans Weilenmann's web page long ago.
Thought you might be interested.

Curtis, I came across your website looking for some new patterns. Your Fripple 2.0 looks like something that would work well on the slow water in the Owyhee late Fall and early Spring. I'll tie some up and let you know. Great job with the website by the way.
ReplyDeleteHey Todd! Thanks and yes, that Fripple would do some damage on the Owyhee. We're heading up to fish it this Spring so I'll let you know and we'll hook up. And you need to convince Dean to try for the Boulders again. This year was crazy good.
DeleteCurtis, I liked your article on organizing your flybox. I would like to see a post on "My Fly Box" like you sometimes see for other big names in fly tying. What is your varsity team for stream nymphs or stillwater streamers, etc. Thanks, Larry Stay
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you guys are carrying Nature's Spirit Materials and Loon Products !
ReplyDeleteThanks Quint
Hey, could you guys do a tutorial on your favorite egg pattern. I,m new to the fly tying world. I thought this would be an easy pattern to learn as well as to catch those pesky rainbows eating the brown trouts eggs. This site has been a great resource for me. Thanks a ton!
ReplyDeleteKeep on keeping on!
Dudes! The Seedskadee Chapter of TU is working on putting together two fun fly tying events (Iron Fly) in Rock Springs and Green River WY, this coming Feb. and March. Are you guys interested in helping out?
ReplyDeleteThat's quite a drive for us... It would be kind of difficult to make it work.
DeleteAm impressed with Bunny Midge and have been searching for Gamakatsu in 30 because of big eye. Will order Ep fibers veevus quill body soon.
ReplyDeleteHi what size is your tube and what is the length on the Bass Deflectinator fly Thanks Mark
ReplyDeleteGuys seriously i did not want to b a dick!!! A few too many cockyails lookin through insta and i thought shot i got those n they dont make them in that color any more i can help...then..woops then shat...then oh for cryin out loud...last apology but a sincere one..

ReplyDeleteSeems as if there are endless amounts of dubbing on the market today. UV, Sparkle, Life cycle etc. etc. etc. Which ones would you guys consider must haves that are good catch all (no pun intended) dubbing blends? Not that I will quit experimenting and adding but just curious.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... If I had to choose a few, I'd definitely choose Hareline Ice Dub, Nature's Spirit Snowshoe Hare's Foot Dubbing, and Hareline Superfine Dubbing. A dispenser of each and you are set. If you specialize in streamers, Bruiser Blend is a must too.
Delete2nd the Hareline superfine..good stuff. Just ordered some of the bruiser barf brown and a few other goodies. Love the original names for you guys products. Thanks for the quick response.
DeleteWhere can you get tear mended adhesive besides your site I just made an order from you and forgot to add it
ReplyDeleteAnd Clark why do they call you cheech is it cuz the same reason your logo colors are red yellow and green just wondering lol your videos are like gospel to me I watch em all
ReplyDeleteMy younger brothers started to call me Cheech because I took a lot of Spanish classes in high school. Then I served a church mission in Argentina for 2 years and learned Spanish and am still fluent. Nope... Never messed with the green stuff ever. The rasta stuff is because Reggae is my favorite genre of music...
DeleteVery cool I wouldn't have guessed that. Yours and curtis'curtis's videos are the best keep up the good work
ReplyDeleteHey Curtis,
ReplyDeleteDo you still tie Frito's Craw Bouncer? If so what materials do you use nowadays? I can't find olive/orange chenille, for instance, can you list the materials and where you can buy them? Or list them and I'll use reasonable facsimiles. Thanks
Been a while since I tied it, but Orange/Black in variegated chenille would be good. Also light olive/brown. http://store.flyfishfood.com/Variegated-Chenille-p/vc.htm
DeleteHooks would be a B10S and you could build a weed guard: http://store.flyfishfood.com/Gamakatsu-B10S-p/gb10s.htm
The throat would be Polar Flash: http://store.flyfishfood.com/Polar-Flash-p/fla20.htm
Barbell eyes, just take your pick: http://store.flyfishfood.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=barbell&Submit=
Claws would be good with micro-pulsator strips in Crawfish Orange: http://store.flyfishfood.com/Micro-Pulsator-Rabbit-Strips-p/mps.htm
And foam: http://store.flyfishfood.com/Fly-Tying-Foam-2mm-p/flyfm.htm
Enjoy!
Do you guys here at fly fish food buy flies from independent tiers? I am looking for ways to sell my flies for a little extra money. I tie mostly trout flies but also tie some funky streamers (some are thanks to you). If you guys do want to buy mine or give me tips on selling them I would really appreciate it. -Nolan
ReplyDeleteIt's not something we normally do just because it's tough to scale and it's tough to maintain consistency at the higher volumes we normally would do. Anyway, there are a lot better ways for you to sell flies (local shops, eBay, your own online store, Instagram etc). We're not really setup to do that unfortunately.
DeleteIs there a place I can see the various colors of bruiser blend or bruiser blend junior?
ReplyDeleteOn the website, if you select a color from the drop-down, it should show you the sample image from that color. It doesn't work on the mobile platform, however, so you need to do it with a regular browser. Or you can come down to our shop in Utah and take a gander. ;)
DeleteHmmmm.... that doesn't seem to work. I have tried a few different browsers to no avail.
ReplyDeleteActually it appears to work for most of the colors with bruiser blend, just not with bb junior.
DeleteRight and some of the newer colors aren't listed (we're working on that). But regular and jr are the same colors, just different fiber lengths. :)
DeleteSo if I order 2 of a Bruiser Blend color....like white....is there some place on the order form/page where I can let you know that I want 1 Regular and 1 Junior (white is not listed among junior flavors...nor is cream)? Glad I found the blog...have not received response via email. Hope you are out on the stream havin' a big time.
ReplyDeleteRegular and Jr are different products on separate pages. If a color isn't shown, it's because we're out of stock. Hoping to have more soon. BTW, we never got an email, so not sure who you sent it to...
DeleteThanks for response, Curtis. Sent my message to orders@flyfishfood.com...subject "help wit order". I'll hold off till I see it listed as available. Hey, thanks so much for all the great videos and reviews you guys do. I really loved the uv shootout... and I'm so stoked to tie some of your innovative streamers.
ReplyDeleteAny sign of WHITE bruiser blend on the horizon? I keep checking back to no avail.
ReplyDeleteJust got confirmation that we will have some in the shop later this afternoon.
DeleteExcellent! I'll be patiently awaiting to order online.
ReplyDeleteJust got it. Should be good to go now.
Deletehey guys trying to find the Stone Fly pattern I thought I saw on your web site cause I placed an on line order for the materials with you (I also thought I saved it) . Anyway it incorporates Senyo's Shaggy Dub Medium brown in the thorax, speckeled yellow rubber legs, striped barred turkey biots, and some cool flashabou 6969. If anyone knows the name I'd sure appreciate your feedback
ReplyDeletehmmmm. let me look...
DeleteHey guys I was just wondering if you could let me know who makes the utility rack or what Its called that is holding the Titan Rod Vaults in the back of the silver Tundra Cewmax in your pictures? I just got myself a vault and I'm looking for a rack to hold it and really like how that looks. Hope to hear from you soon.
ReplyDeleteThis is the one: https://www.usrack.com/responsive/paddlers-truck-rack.php
DeleteI am a custom tier and one of my customers asked me to tie some flexo crabs. Can you assist me in sourcing the flexo tubing? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteCheech looks and sounds south of the border, not from Dino Land.
ReplyDeleteWhy on your web site are your whiting capes all different prices for the same grade. If they are the same grade shouldn't they be the same price?
ReplyDeleteWho ties the flies you guys sell? I can't imagine you guys have that kind of time on your hands what with all the video production (which is awesome and invaluable by the way). Just wondering before I place an order, whose labor I'm paying for.
ReplyDeleteWe sell Fulling Mill, Umpqua, and Montana Fly flies in our shop. Tying for the bins would be much too time intensive, and they do a great job with quality.
DeleteHi, I am a long way from Utah so can not phone or visit but via Upavon Fly fishing site came across the excellent video of the Weinermobile HOPPER.
ReplyDeleteIn the video there is a comment to the effect of see our video of how to glue/stick two types of foam together. I have searched your site and can find no reference to this video.
Please could you give me a clue as to where I might find this video?
Many thanks
John Lutkin
Hi John,
